Your Home Improvement To-Dos for 2015: Check Your Gutters

Most of us would like to install our home's gutters once and never have to think about them again. Unfortunately, like the rest of our home, gutters age and wear over time. So, it's important that you inspect them regularly to assess the extent of any damage. This way you'll be able to catch issues before they turn into even bigger headaches.

In 2015, make it a point to do several quick checks on your Rochester, MN gutters to ensure that they're performing as they should. Here are some gutter to-dos to add to your home improvement checklist for the New Year:

Watch out for loose or torn gutters. Make sure the spikes or hangers that attach the gutter to your roof are secure.

  • Identify holes, leaks, and failing sealants along the seams. Check very carefully for any damage and consult your expert gutter contractor for necessary repairs or replacement.
  • Check for accumulated debris inside the gutter. The gutter's function is to catch water and direct it to a drainage system. This way, water is kept away from the rest of the house, preventing mold growth and structural damage caused by leaking or sagging boards. Clear away leaves, twigs, and debris from the outdoors to ensure clog-free gutters.
  • Keep an eye out for untrimmed trees. This isn't just a landscaping tip to reveal the beauty of your roof. Without overgrown branches hanging over or around your home, it's less likely that leaves, branches, and debris will fall into your gutters and clog them.

Bonus tip: We don't recommend climbing onto your roof to clean your gutters. This takes a lot of effort and could be dangerous, especially if you're not very familiar with using a ladder. We suggest calling a roofing or gutter expert to help you out, or installing a gutter cover.

Gutter covers, like the ones we install, are designed to keep debris out of your gutters so you don't have to keep cleaning them over and over again. This product is widely available on the market today, but not all gutter covers are created the same.

Gutter Helmet® is your best bet among all gutter guards for your Rochester, MN home and surrounding areas. It has a unique textured surface and nose-forward design that allows water to flow smoothly into the gutters and away from your home. It's engineered to have a narrow slit - only 3/8" wide! - that keeps leaves, twigs, and debris out without any effort.
